Fourth-grader Avrie Salinas Gouveia won the statewide Lion’s Club “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest, Kona Lion Norman Sakata said.

Gouveia was a student at Honaunau Elementary School when she drew the poster, which featured Hawaii Island, a hula dancer, a hibiscus flower, a fish, a musical instrument, volcanoes, turtles and a rainbow.

Kona students have only won the statewide contest a few times in the 34 years it has been running, said Sakata. About 8,000 posters were submitted statewide. Gouveia’s prize was $140. Another Honaunau student, kindergartener Elijah Keliihoomalu, took fourth place overall at the state level. His prize was $65.
